Hey, I've searched for other topics on this and couldn't find anything. So I had a question, if you join the army/reserves, do you automatically get a shooting license, or do you still have to apply?

thanks in advance

Every state is different, you're still going to have to apply, but the requirements will vary.

Technically you are using the armys license, so you don't automatically get to go out and buy guns and ammo.

Check the laws for where you live and apply then.

To clear up my post, if you want to do your own thing civvy wise, you'll need to go and get a licence, you won't get (or will you need) a license for any ADF activities.

You will also not be automatically approved for a licence solely because your are in the ADF. All states require you to show a 'genuine need' for a firearms licence.

ok awesome thanks for the replies
not to sound rude though, how could ANY civilian have a genuine need for a weapon. does recreational use (ie, practicing at a rifle range, etc...) count as a need?

In most states to be classified a hobby shooter or sport shooter you have to be a member of a pistol or rifle club for a prescribed period of time, which is usually quite a long time.

And to keep your membership you have to turn up to so many meetings and shoots a year. Check out http://www.ssaa.org.au/ for more information.

AusMilitary.com is Australia's leading military discussion forum. Originally formed back in 2004 as AusSpecialForces.com as a forum for, by, and about the Australian Special Forces, the forum has since widened it's scope to include all members and branches of the ADF as well as our honoured guests and allies from overseas. Despite some sections being open to the public, the forum still enjoys the membership and advice of respected members of the Special Forces and Special Operations Forces both local and international, as well as those from elite specialities in the conventional forces. From recruit training right up to SF selection tips - if it's frank and honest advice you're after, you'll find it here.
