Without identifying too much who I am, as I don't want to jeopardise my options within the RAAF, I have been looking at what is outside.

I have worked for over a decade in the Aircraft Trades. After enlisting, I completed a Bachelor of Business and I was hoping my skills as a Trade Supervisor would transfer over with my Degree into a management or leadership position outside.

I have only been looking a few weeks, but I don't seem to be hearing too much back yet. Has anyone got any good tips about making the transition and getting the foot in the door outside.

Are ASC still hunting people in Adelaide? It's not aircraft related, but it trade supervision, defence back ground, etc etc.

First priority for you mate:
get your CV/resume updated and sorted.
Go and see some of those professional Resume updaters/writers. The mobs who can translate your defence experience to civvy HR-speak would be worth their weight in gold. Just don't ask me who they are - I don't know myself!

Use the buzz words in the job adverts in your cover letter and CV. HR people know bugger all about the job they're recruiting for, but they know the words they want to see.

Hi

Not sure how you got on, but, for those reading this thinking of getting out, I have done it and with a clear plan you will have civie companies bitting at each other’s ankles to get you. The process to getting out is simple, just follow these steps:

1. Get advice and talk to Family and Friends, especially those who will be effected. My family gave up a lot during my service and to lose that support and identity was a challenge for the whole family.
2. Work out an industry to go into. A tip, staying working for Defence is rewarding if you can acquire a roll as a Defence Contractor. There is plenty of work to go around these days if you know where to look. (Feel free to contact myself for advice on employment agencies looking for Defence Cleared Pers)
3. Link in with an RTO (Registered Training Organisation) to assist you in planning the qualifications you need to land you the job you want. I run a Defence Specific RTO www.aimpointrpl.edu.au, we are experts in this field as well as how to gain funding so you are virtually not of pocket in most cases.
4. Get a professional to write your Resume and Cover Letter, if the job requires selection criteria I would use the services of a professional writer also. They in some cases guarantee a interview or your money back
5. Become confident in yourself and skills, play out your interview techniques with others so that you are comfortable in selling yourself.
6. Finally when you’re out, be reassured of your training and its effectiveness. Whilst the terminology is different the effectiveness behind tools such as SMEAC are great methods to leadership in the Civilian world.

For anyone seeking free advice on transition feel free to contact myself via my website www.aimpointrpl.edu.au or email markrobinson@aimpointrpl.edu.au. I’m always happy to assist other Defence personnel and point them in the right direction.

The soul of a nation stirred.

AusMilitary.com is Australia's leading military discussion forum. Originally formed back in 2004 as AusSpecialForces.com as a forum for, by, and about the Australian Special Forces, the forum has since widened it's scope to include all members and branches of the ADF as well as our honoured guests and allies from overseas. Despite some sections being open to the public, the forum still enjoys the membership and advice of respected members of the Special Forces and Special Operations Forces both local and international, as well as those from elite specialities in the conventional forces. From recruit training right up to SF selection tips - if it's frank and honest advice you're after, you'll find it here.
