As the title suggests, I'm just wondering about what can stop you, or deny you, from serving in the Army ? Obviously asthma and stuff like that, but what else ( in a medical sense) can stop you from serving (even the littlest problem) ?. What does the medical examintion look at apart from the obvious ? Just I write like a child, waaaah get a complete picture before I go talk to a recruiter.

Lack of a heart used to be the No.1 cause for blokes not getting in. Although now days it does'nt seem to be such a problem by the looks of some of the blokes getting around.

the size of the book listing conditions and symptoms that will disqualify you is as thick as your phone book. There's far too many things to list here. A short summary goes

Many different types of surgery
Any sort of problems with running
breathing problems (such as asthma)
chronic physiological problems that require medication or regular treatment
cardiovascular probelms
intellectual problems
most genetic defects
many eye problems
almost any motorskill problem

and the list goes on and on...

if there is something you are specifically worried about call an interstate recruiting, give a fake name and ask over the phone. They may be able to tell you and then you can decide if you want to keep that particular problem to yourself.

You'll be lucky if the docs don't pick up on it. They do look you know - they'll also ask how your running is going. Flat feet can cause running problems so if you have problems and flat feet you're probably out. If you no problems at all then it's a different story.

AusMilitary.com is Australia's leading military discussion forum. Originally formed back in 2004 as AusSpecialForces.com as a forum for, by, and about the Australian Special Forces, the forum has since widened it's scope to include all members and branches of the ADF as well as our honoured guests and allies from overseas. Despite some sections being open to the public, the forum still enjoys the membership and advice of respected members of the Special Forces and Special Operations Forces both local and international, as well as those from elite specialities in the conventional forces. From recruit training right up to SF selection tips - if it's frank and honest advice you're after, you'll find it here.
