I'm just curious if any of the sig roles see any form of direct combat?

I've searched through the whole list on the Defence Jobs website and to my understanding it seems that either Operator Electronic Warfare and Communications Operator sees the most combat.

Am I correct in assuming that or are there other Signallers that get the opportunity to go out on patrol and get themselves in the thick of things?

Sigs are regarded as pogues, however there are sigs in certain jobs who have seen combat in recent times and regularly patrol and deploy with units who are not pogues.

I have, yet it doesnt actually mention what type of Signaller he was, just that he was attached to the SASR. I am uncertain whether those attached to specific Infantry corps actually go out with them or are in a position where information is sent to them to relay on to another person, or however else it is done?

All depends on what unit you are in. Jock wallace was a communications operator.

As you have probably noted very, very few units in this days army have seen substantial direct combat and the amount of sigs that have are even less. You'd be lucky to find more than 15 normal signallers in the army that have seen a fair bit of combat. If you want to get out and about in a sig role pick either of the two jobs you have mentioned. Though if it was me I'd pick the one with more pay which would be EW.

Hey jonno,

I was just wondering are you in Sigs? If yes, what job do you currently have and what would a average day be like in Sigs?

I won't take any offence if you don't want to disclose that information.

I currently have a Enlistment date for the Technician of Telecommunicatiosn Systems which is the 4th of June. Would just like to know what im getting myself into :axe:

All Sigs do the Combat Sigs course bfore going into their specicifc role IET's. This is just learning how to set up comms and be integrated into a rifle platoon. Nothing special.
Sigs isnt that glorious job you want because on top of your normal equipment when pack marching you now have this lovely radio to carry that just adds more weight. Other shit thing is when you run into a contact, and everyone around you dump packs, yours stays on :???:

That said, when your not stuck with the grunts your usually driving around everywhere, so its fairly easy in that respect, nothing to ardous.

So i should be looking forward to the extra pack weight then...glorious. :goodman: But all that put aside. What would you say the good parts of Sigs are?

Yeah the pay is fairly decent. The job i am getting Enlisted for, after 18 months of IET's, i will be getting paid around the $51k mark. Not bad for someone who would of only done year 11, and got paid to study Electronics and Comms within the army.

AusMilitary.com is Australia's leading military discussion forum. Originally formed back in 2004 as AusSpecialForces.com as a forum for, by, and about the Australian Special Forces, the forum has since widened it's scope to include all members and branches of the ADF as well as our honoured guests and allies from overseas. Despite some sections being open to the public, the forum still enjoys the membership and advice of respected members of the Special Forces and Special Operations Forces both local and international, as well as those from elite specialities in the conventional forces. From recruit training right up to SF selection tips - if it's frank and honest advice you're after, you'll find it here.
