Why do you want to be a combat engineer? What have you heard that appeals to you? How old are you? Furthermore, why do you want to join the ADF, what do you hope to get out of it?

I only ask because you'll get responses that say combat engineers are awesome from combat engineers, and reponses that say they aren't worth their weight in shit by non-combat engineers or people that have been screwed over by them. I think you'll get more informative answers by telling us a little about yourself, along the lines of the questions I mentioned above.

Sounds like your after info for your JOEs day right?
What sort of work day are you after? A training day, exercise day, deployment day, day in barracks with nothing on, ect ect....
I don't want to be a combat engineer, so my opinion on if it's worth it or not means bugger all, why do you want to be one? If we know why you want to be one, we can give you a better idea of if you're going to get what you want out of it.

hey all

thanks for the replies thus far,

i am 18,and was origanally looking to become a combat engineer so that i get something that is of use out of the army( a few tickets on plant equipment ect) incase worst comes to worst and i happen to be medically discharged ect, and i have somthing to fall back on.

i wish to join the adf as i have had a 5 year stint as a cadet, and enjoyed it immensly, thus i wish to futher that and make the adf my career.

i actually leave for kapooka at the begining of next month, and have been offerdto take my second option of rifleman, somthing else of which i highly desire to become at some stage, so i suppose i am just weighing up all the info that i can find to help me make my decision.

if you wish to know anything more just ask.

anyway once again thank you all for your replies

regards

I was thinking along those rough lines as well, perhaps with the word officer thrown in there somewhere too! A bit of a stab in the dark would be for me to ask, do you guys know of any trades that can link in well with Combat Engineers? For another option/opinion

Also, that my HQ section on the defencejobs site, aren't the games great! :smt024 is the advanced job search (character/personality test) worth a shot? Or just fixed to say a certain job when they need to fill it up

I think there was a thread on that test a while ago, and the general consensus was that it was rigged.

With RAE you have the combat engineer side and the field engineer/construction side.

You can be a:
CER SIDE
Combat Engineer: You basically are a glorified labourer, you make field defense's, watermanship (boats and floating bridges), explosives, bridging, water purification. You will work hard and you do alot of shitty jobs (blowing shit up is fun until you have to prode your way thru that mine field to get to it) but also do alot of good shit like watermanship.
Once your a CPL you can do your demo course, SGT & WO can do the EOD course. This is good if you want to earn a bucket load teaching kiddies how to search minefields.
Engineer Driver: Same as above but you drive the vehicles around, can lead to heavy transport such as mack & sliner, which will put you in a construction squadron usually.

CONSTRUCTION SIDE
Tradie: Sparkys, chippys, shitdoctors etc
Plantie: Basically all the equipment you see on freeway construction sites, construct/repair alot of roads, airfields, help with field defense's etc.
All the tradies and planties get civvie quals and plant do usually recruit guys out of heavy transport, so if you wanted to do some hard yakka first you could be a CE then get your driver codes transfer to a heavy transport section then move onto plant as you get fatter and older.

You also have you geomatic serveyers etc, so if you have any specific questions then ask away

Top Post, don't have much time to go in depth with q's at the moment, and I think we'll wait and see what camel wants to know too, lets remember to check what he originally wanted. (not that I can really help to answer it, only add more to the pile)

By the way, I think I got Sparky (electrician right?) what's the other two (chippy and shitdoctor) with the etc, could you specify anymore you know about please?

Ben, you reckon that thread may still be around? Any ideas what the Subject name mighta been?

AusMilitary.com is Australia's leading military discussion forum. Originally formed back in 2004 as AusSpecialForces.com as a forum for, by, and about the Australian Special Forces, the forum has since widened it's scope to include all members and branches of the ADF as well as our honoured guests and allies from overseas. Despite some sections being open to the public, the forum still enjoys the membership and advice of respected members of the Special Forces and Special Operations Forces both local and international, as well as those from elite specialities in the conventional forces. From recruit training right up to SF selection tips - if it's frank and honest advice you're after, you'll find it here.
