I know that this site is more about the Army, than the Navy, but i have a few questions that may or may not be able to be answered.

I have read on the navy website what life in the navy is like but i am wondering if anyone here can provide me with some personal accounts on what life in the navy is like? Both at sea and when and when at home.

I have been looking at becoming a Boatswains Mate and am wondering if anyone has anymore information about this job? I have read around the forums but most topics seem to not be answered or locked.

If i were to join the navy and after my period of service was up, can i transfer to a job in the Army of Air Force if i wanted to?

My last question is that does anyone know of any sites, like this one, but more for Navy, or any other sites, besides the Navy and Defence Jobs site that can provide a different outlook on the Navy, and provide me with some information.

Thanks

There is a Navy section here mate, you might want to check that out.

First up, why a BM? I want you to explain to me what is so appealing to you about what a BM does.

I have been looking at becoming a BM for a few reasons. The first being the jobs that they perform appeal to me, fast roping from helicopters, being a part of boarding parties etc.

Another reason is that no matter whether i decided to go to the Army, Navy or Air Force, i decided that i wanted a combat role within whichever one i chose. Now because i chose to go to the Navy, i have been looking at the different combat roles available and i decided to go BM as it seems like an interesting job within the Navy.

But the other thing i was also looking at was a Seaman Officer, but i am not too sure how this works, so also if anyone can shed some light on how the officer process goes in the Navy could be good.

Mate, boarding parties are made up from all of ships company, not all BMs get put on the Boarding Party - you might get stabbed for a Survival Equipment course and have to spent your career fixing life jackets and never touch another weapon.
You work with chicks mate, fat pusser chicks.

Joining up for a job for the one slight chance of ever boarding a hostile ship (which will never happen, BMs arent allowed to board a hostile ship) is stupid mate.

You're watching too much Sea Patrol me thinks.

Well other than BM's, is there any other Navy jobs that may be worth looking into?

Or any other jobs in any of the Forces that may be worth looking into? I looked into becoming a Rifleman at one stage but i wasn't to sure about that? Should i possibly reconsider that option?

edit: also i didn't know that BM's don't get to board hostile ships, is there a reason for this?

Depends what you want out of your time in the ADF, be it a trade or something else.

Why were you not sure? You want to do a combat job but you're not sure about the only job in the ADF that will give you an opportunity for combat?

Because their prime job is chipping and painting, if you want to do a combat job, go Infantry, get fit and good at your job, attempt selection for SASR or 4RAR.

AusMilitary.com is Australia's leading military discussion forum. Originally formed back in 2004 as AusSpecialForces.com as a forum for, by, and about the Australian Special Forces, the forum has since widened it's scope to include all members and branches of the ADF as well as our honoured guests and allies from overseas. Despite some sections being open to the public, the forum still enjoys the membership and advice of respected members of the Special Forces and Special Operations Forces both local and international, as well as those from elite specialities in the conventional forces. From recruit training right up to SF selection tips - if it's frank and honest advice you're after, you'll find it here.
