Hello,

I have just recently completed grade 12 and applied for the GAP year for the Navy 2 months ago. To my delight I passed my You Session and Job Assessment day and received a recommendation letter and so will be participating in the GAP year early next year. However I am in a bit of a pickle at the moment with Navy application process. I have passed everything yet a miniscule problem has hindered my enlistment. Apparently I have bad hearing as a result of listening to loud music over the past years, which I don't believe is bad at all. I received my report from the ear specialist today and it states that I have "bilateral high tone sensory-neural noise induced deafness".

Will this make it impossible for me to join the military?

Regards,
Duck.

Why not just call 13 19 01 and ask them?
They don't bite.

Might want to reconsider your ipod usage too, 60 years of asking people to repeat themselves isn't going to be fun for you....

It's your career, if it's too much of a hassle....

Believe me I've tried diligently. What I meant by hassle is that its honestly difficult to get hold of someone who knows what they're talking about.

Whenever I call 131901, they usually say to contact my case manager.

Whenever I call 131902 for my case manager, I've only ever been successful twice. The rest of the time I have to leave a message on the answering machine and receive a call back 2 weeks later.

Didn't you take a hearing test during assessment day? I know I did first time round, it was during my medical, they told me then and there that my hearing was ok. What's all this talk about specialists? Did they recommend you see one? Or did you take it upon yourself? I presume if you passed the one on assessment day then you should be fine. Your hearing can't be all that bad, your only about 18 years of age, I'd suggest not listening to music a couple of days before you get your ears checked for any reason or just tone down your intake. Especially todays type of music, can't hear that crap anyway.

 make sure you clean your ears, wouldn't want that being the cause of removal from enlistment.

Yes I did take a hearing test on the day. I didnt pass that but everything else so the doctor asked me to visit a specialist.

I know that I'm more than capable for this job yet this little drama is getting in my way. Sad really.

AusMilitary.com is Australia's leading military discussion forum. Originally formed back in 2004 as AusSpecialForces.com as a forum for, by, and about the Australian Special Forces, the forum has since widened it's scope to include all members and branches of the ADF as well as our honoured guests and allies from overseas. Despite some sections being open to the public, the forum still enjoys the membership and advice of respected members of the Special Forces and Special Operations Forces both local and international, as well as those from elite specialities in the conventional forces. From recruit training right up to SF selection tips - if it's frank and honest advice you're after, you'll find it here.
