Evening everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has had anything to do with the light cav scouts?
Just trying to understand their role, and why exactly it's a reserves only role.

Also are there any instances of these boys being deployed? I know some of the PWLH has been working in the bushfire areas in Victoria lately.

They needed the reservist M113's for the second Mech Infantry unit, but they wanted to keep the reserve cav units on the order of battle, with something approaching the same role. So they mounted them in Land Rovers and called them Light Cav Scouts.

There is one unit mounted in Bushmasters, they are deployable, the other blokes would be deployable too (Solomons, Timor Leste) , but they won't be going to Afghanistan any time soon.

12/16 has been sending soldiers to both Timor Leste, Iraq and Afghanistan for a while now. Both in APC's (Timor) and Bushmasters. Almost makes me wish I was armoured .... almost!

Most cav scouts deploy in a role other than cav scout

Am I right in understanding that Light Cav Scouts are well trained for patrolling, recon etc?

What do you consider well trained?

Maybe make that "trained" then. Just wondering if they are always upping skill sets, and if there is more to it than all vehicle based.

It's a short period of sitting in the back before moving on to vehicle driving and commanding.

AusMilitary.com is Australia's leading military discussion forum. Originally formed back in 2004 as AusSpecialForces.com as a forum for, by, and about the Australian Special Forces, the forum has since widened it's scope to include all members and branches of the ADF as well as our honoured guests and allies from overseas. Despite some sections being open to the public, the forum still enjoys the membership and advice of respected members of the Special Forces and Special Operations Forces both local and international, as well as those from elite specialities in the conventional forces. From recruit training right up to SF selection tips - if it's frank and honest advice you're after, you'll find it here.
