Hello all,

Please excuse me if I've posted in the incorrect location.

I'm a relatively recent trainee, completed Kapooka this year, and I'm finding that I'm not particularly enjoying the Army. I've had some time parading at a UR and had a few weekend exercises and am not enjoying the field environment or training. I'm in a combat corps and was denied a corps transfer to a role I feel I would enjoy much more.

I do not see myself sticking with the Army long term in a combat role. I'm wondering whether anybody could offer any advice? Am I making the wrong decision?

I have also been waitlisted onto a course that is within a few months, and I would not want to cause problems for my unit by delaying this decision and not seeking advice on what I'm currently thinking. This is making me slightly stressed with trying to figure out how I want to proceed.

P.S. I am guesting with another unit and will be for some time.

Thank you.

Hay mate as a fellow choc noob I can only give you my opinion which is worth fa really but I’d recommend changing roles or giving it a miss if combat role ain’t for you then don’t do it
Also is the courses your listed for your current combat role related?
If so you might be better off letting them know your not keen as you’d be potentially taking a spot away from a member who enjoys the role

Shame on the denial of the transfer of roles don’t really know enough to comment on that perhaps someone else can offer advise on that matter

Thanks for the advice, mate.

The course is indeed for combat corps.

Considering how many trainees are on the list for combat corp courses that definitely is a factor.

Only that the unit rarely allowed them prior to completion of IETs. I didn't get more info than that.

Have a chat with the padre, he might be able to short circuit things for you.

And on the other side of the coin, upskilling is never a bad thing, you can take skills, attitudes and traits developed on that course into your new role if you're able to swing that corps change. You may even develop a new appreciation for the job when you get into it propperly.

AusMilitary.com is Australia's leading military discussion forum. Originally formed back in 2004 as AusSpecialForces.com as a forum for, by, and about the Australian Special Forces, the forum has since widened it's scope to include all members and branches of the ADF as well as our honoured guests and allies from overseas. Despite some sections being open to the public, the forum still enjoys the membership and advice of respected members of the Special Forces and Special Operations Forces both local and international, as well as those from elite specialities in the conventional forces. From recruit training right up to SF selection tips - if it's frank and honest advice you're after, you'll find it here.
