The job is incredibly physically demanding. When I was in there was a call for volunteers to go 255 and only one guy from the gun line put his hand up. He quickly regretted it after 1 field ex where he went down with heat badly. He was paired up with the Captain on his own(stupid decision) and made to carry everything a JFT carries; The Captain, a sociopath refusing to bare some of the weight. His pack weighed close to 50kilos, he'd never carried that much in his life, none of us had at that point. After about 5 days he went down and was CASEVAC'd to which the FO remarked "good riddance". As such the job has acquired some what of reputation and alot of gun line are happy where they are with the boys, screaming and yelling, carrying heavy shit, driving big trucks, making gun go bang and not having to do any stomping.

Also with the addage of the Digital communication suite the job is alot more technical with greater emphasis placed on knowledge of communication equipment rather than IMTs, patrolling, recon and actually doing CFF. Alot of your time is spent unfucking equipment. Typically the first 24 months you're bassically a trail ape carrying a JFO's equipment and you actual ECN is "Artillery Signaller" with the Call for Fire ability.

The stupid things they were putting the JFT's in was ridiculous.

They had two go down with heat and one of the Inf guys that was helping blew his knee and was airlifted out.

The two Tassie reservists who had had no acclimatisation had no issues.
