Quite a tricky one, ellisg.
The uniform is the problem. All the images I can find of senior BEF commanders in full dress uniform show epaulettes of entwined braid, without tassels. Only navy (RN) senior officers have tasselled epaulettes, but they are all either clean shaven or full-bearded, which I suspect is down to RN dress regulations. Further, all the coloured images I can find show the epaulettes and collar embroidery as gold. Neither the collar pattern nor colour on the button subject match any image found so far.
Speculatively, perhaps the badge maker started with a black and white image and used some "artistic licence" in colourising it. The position of the tasselled epaulette looks rather dodgy.
Any more details of the other objects that came with the buttons that might give a few clues to the previous owner?
WRT Birdwood, he was very popular with the AIF (which is a different thing from being a good operational commander) and was keen to become GG of Australia after the war. Many veterans supported the idea, but the Scullin Labour government was determined that the time had come for an Australian-born GG, and the appointment went to Sir Isaac Isaacs in late 1930.
Thanks for your comments Midway.
Unfortunately I don't have any other clues so I'm going with another suggestion of Douglas Haig. He looks a bit thinner in this profile image and the moustache not as bushy as some other photos but otherwise would be the best fit in terms of uniform (with some artistic licence).
