Post subject:  Identifying a uniform
Hi all,

I was going through my grandfather's old photos and found some photos of him that I had never seen before. He passed away before I joined the RAAF, so he never talked to me about any time in any sort of Defence Force (my grandmother, his wife has since passed also) so I am unable to ask him about the photos unfortunately.

Someone, perhaps my grandmother, has written a caption below one of the photos that it was a Home Guard / Army Reserve uniform. It looks similar to a Light Horse uniform after doing some googling on this issue. I included a screenshot to compare the uniforms.

Can anyone identify the uniform from the old photos, or does anyone know where I might be able to look up records of his potential service?

I apologise of this is the wrong forum for this sort of question, it seemed to fit this topic the closest.

The rolls for the various conflicts are online, just google WW2 roll or WW1 roll. If you have his service number and first name, you should be able to nail him.

The uniform certainly looks like light horse.

Ok thanks, I'll check it out, didn't even know they were online. I didn't even know that he served at all so I don't have any service number or even dates but he has a pretty distinct name so I might be able to find it that way. I'd be interested to know if it specifies what unit he would have been in.

Ok so he isn't in the World War 2 roll, which my mother/his daughter believes would be the time the photo was taken. She does remember her dad and brothers talking about participating in war effort activities during World War 2 but that's all she remembers. I wonder if the Home Guard / Volunteer Defence Corps is not included in the World War 2 roll. I've tried searching the national archives also, but no joy there.

It's a bit of a mystery. Wish I knew about these pictures before he died.

Your grandfather is wearing the dress uniform for a Militia (= Army Reserve WW2) Light Horse unit:

If you contact the good folks at the Australian Light Horse Association I reckon they could work out the actual unit, based on the right shoulder patch (not many were triangular) and your grandfather's location.

Fantastic, that does look exactly like it and thank you for looking into that. I will get in contact with them and see if they can identify any more details.

I really appreciate you helping us learn more about grandpa. Thank you once again.
