This is a random question, but does anyone have any good examples (or any examples at all haha) of any Main Defensive Battles of note? If they're Australian all the better?

I'm specifically referring to the type of battle that would give nay-sayers a reason as to why Infantry dig in out bush (not a defence of a Fire Support Base, but a battle that occurred after a platoon or company patrolled to a feature, dug in to Stage 3 etc) .

I'm aware of the Battle of Kapyong, but are there other modern examples (Australian or otherwise) of when a force dug in and had a big victory?

To dig or not to dig....really depends on the threat. I've seen nay-sayers undergo an immediate change of heart after experiencing their first incoming RPG....

Just because they are fairly well known, like the battle of Kapyong.

I was more chasing examples that aren't overly common knowledge, but still illustrate why defensive positions are used.

Look at The Hook. Also look at Vietnam from the VCs side, a lot of our big engagements were against dug in VC, and they were quite difficult to remove.
I think that's why the old guys that trained us in the 90s were so keen on digging in. They knew it worked from both sides.

Definitely dates back a bit further back, but the Siege of Tobruk was the first time in WW2 that German Panzers were stopped; notably by the Australian 9th Division.
